Favourite Furniture Trends Spotted At Salone Del Mobile 2023 By Pia Orr

Salone del Mobile‘s 61st edition returned to Milan last week in full swing. The most influential international furniture fair in the world brings together the entire design community to Fiera Milano every year. And what a spectacular show it was. Split over 20 halls, a huge amount of furniture, lighting, and other home furnishing was showcased. Over 300,000 visitors attended Salone this year which just goes to show the huge scale of this event. It was fascinating to see what the future holds for furniture design and get a sneak peek of 2023 trends.

Here are our top furniture trends from Salone:

1. Modular Sofas

Big sofas are back and we couldn’t be any happier about it. Modular sofas, in particular, are having a moment right now. Thanks to their adaptability, modular units are perfect for all types of room layouts. A generously proportioned modular sofa can make a real statement in a large open-plan area, or work equally well to make a small space cosier. You can let your creativity lose by adding individual pieces like corner units, armless units, chaise ends, or even a side table. Or why not use different colour combinations for a bigger impact?

2. Warm, Muted Colours

Warm earthy colours, such as browns, taupe, and terracotta, are huge right now. Warm tones evoke a sense of calm in the midst of hectic lifestyles. Especially brown sofas are making a comeback this year and they are curvier and softer than we’ve seen before. We saw lots of velvet and microfiber on many stands at Salone which goes to show these materials are still very popular. Muted colours go with everything and add warmth to your home. You don’t need to worry about them going out of style either. These earthy tones work beautifully with whites and greys, as well as more vivid colours.

3. Soft Shapes & Curves

As mentioned before, curvy sofas (and furniture in general) are trending at the moment. Round corners and soft shapes instantly instill a relaxing mood in any space. Not to mention how well they work with odd-shaped, irregular spaces. There is also something to be said about the comfort. From an ergonomic point, curved-shaped furniture is a winner. No more sharp edges to bash into and there is nothing quite like sitting on a generously padded round armchair with a foam seat to give you that extra comfort. The Ruth armchair is a perfect example. The backrest and the seat flow seamlessly into the armrest so you can just sit back and relax.

4. Coloured & Textured Glass

From tabletops to lighting, coloured and textured glass is having a moment right now. Glass furniture has always been considered classy and timeless. Now it is more textured and decorative making them perfect accent pieces. We also love a contrast like seen in the design of the Panton side table. The delicate bronzed glass together with the wood veneer creates a striking ensemble that you won’t be able to resist.

5. Garden Furniture

When it comes to garden furniture, 2023 will be all about bringing the indoors out. The lines between outdoor and indoor furniture are more blurred than ever. Outdoor fabrics are mimicking indoor materials to ensure maximum comfort and that the design flows. Light-up outdoor furniture is also gaining in popularity which is wonderful to see.

6. Irregular & Resin Dining Tables

Irregular design in dining tables is huge at the moment. Irregular shapes are a clever way to add interest and depth to a room with minimal effort. Resin dining tables are also gaining in popularity based on what we saw at Salone del Mobile. We love the organic and imperfect look of resin in table designs which is very much in fashion right now.

7. Cloud Beds

Cloud beds have been trending on social media since the start of the year and we spotted some fabulous ones at Salone as well. We love the floating bed look, especially when combined with minimalist furniture. There is no need to stick to one type of material either. Mixing different fabrics when designing your bed allows you to create the perfect piece suitable for your taste and lifestyle.
