Food Discovery: A Commercial Interior Design Project

In the evolving landscape of commercial interior design, the boundary between residential comfort and professional functionality has blurred. Today’s hospitality environments – be they luxury hotel lounges, high-end corporate social hubs or boutique restaurants – demand a level of sophistication that prioritises the human experience without compromising on the rigorous demands of contract use.

For the modern architect and interior designer, the challenge lies in specifying pieces that offer a “home-away-from-home” tactile quality while ensuring the durability required for high-traffic areas. Domkapa’s latest project showcase highlights this delicate balance, demonstrating how curated furniture selection can define the architectural rhythm of a space and elevate the brand identity of a commercial venture.

Project Concept & Design Vision: Architectural Fluidity

The featured project centres on a concept of “architectural fluidity”. The space is defined by its soaring ceilings, floor-to-ceiling sheer drapery and rhythmic fluted columns that provide a sense of classical structure within a contemporary framework.

The design vision was to create a multi-functional environment that transitions seamlessly from a daytime coffee lounge to an evening cocktail and dining destination. To achieve this, the layout was divided into two distinct but visually connected zones: a high-seating bar area for informal networking and a refined dining section for more structured interactions.

The colour palette remains strictly sophisticated – anchored in oatmeals, warm walnuts and soft bronzes – allowing the textures of the materials to take centre stage. By utilising a monochromatic approach with varied tactile finishes, the design avoids visual clutter, fostering an atmosphere of “quiet luxury” that is essential in high-end commercial interior design.

Materials, Layout & Atmosphere

Every element in this commercial setting was selected to contribute to a cohesive sensory experience.

The Material Palette

The choice of materials speaks directly to the needs of the specifier:

  • Textured Upholstery: The use of bouclé and ribbed fabrics provides a tactile depth that reacts beautifully with the natural light filtering through the sheers;
  • Warm Timbers: Walnut accents in table legs and chair frames provide an organic grounding, essential for counteracting the “coldness” often associated with large-scale commercial volumes;
  • Metallic Accents: Subdued metal finishes on the footrests of bar chairs and table bases add a touch of modern rigor and ensure longevity against wear and tear.

Strategic Layout

The layout utilises the “island” concept. Instead of rigid rows of seating, clusters are formed around the fluted columns. This encourages natural movement and provides pockets of privacy within an open-plan space. The transition from the Anna Bar Chair zone to the Anna Dining Chair area is handled through a shared design language, ensuring that the transition feels intentional rather than fragmented.

Highlighted Domkapa Pieces

The Social Anchor: Rachel Pouf & Inside Table Set

In the foreground of the lounge, the Rachel Pouf serves as a versatile seating solution. Its low profile doesn’t obstruct sightlines, making it perfect for central placement in a lobby or lounge. Paired with the Inside Table Set, it creates a flexible “breakout” zone. The Inside Table Set is particularly valuable for commercial projects due to its nesting capability and lightweight frame, allowing staff to reconfigure the space for events with minimal effort.

The Bar Experience: Anna Bar Chair & Adam Bar Table

The bar area is defined by the juxtaposition of the Anna Bar Chair and Adam Bar Table.

  • The Anna Bar Chair features an enveloping backrest that provides ergonomic support for long-duration seating – a critical factor in hospitality.
  • The Adam Bar Table offers a sleeker silhouette, emphasising the verticality of the surrounding columns.

Anna utilises high-density foam and a reinforced frame, ensuring it maintains its form and comfort levels under heavy daily use.

The Dining Destination: Adam Dining Table & Anna Dining Chair

Transitioning to the dining area, the Adam Dining Table stands as a testament to functional minimalism. Its central pedestal base is a strategic choice for commercial interior design, as it maximises legroom and allows for flexible chair placement without the interference of corner legs.

The Anna Dining Chair complements the table with its signature curved silhouette. Its design provides a sense of enclosure and intimacy, which is often difficult to achieve in high-ceilinged commercial spaces.

Why These Pieces Work for Professional Projects

Specifying furniture for a commercial project requires more than just an eye for aesthetics; it requires a deep understanding of technical requirements and project longevity. Domkapa pieces are engineered with the professional specifier in mind.

1. Bespoke Customisation

Every commercial project has a unique DNA. Domkapa offers extensive customisation options, from COM (Customer’s Own Material) capabilities to bespoke finish adjustments. This allows designers to tailor the Anna or Adam series to fit the specific colour story of a brand or the acoustic requirements of a room.

2. Durability and Maintenance

In hospitality, the “cost per use” is a vital metric. The materials used in these pieces – from high-grade solid woods to performance fabrics – are chosen for their ability to age gracefully. The metal footrests on the bar chairs are specifically designed to withstand the friction of constant use, maintaining the aesthetic integrity of the piece over time.

3. Ergonomic Excellence

A beautiful chair is a failure in a commercial setting if it is uncomfortable. The curvature of the Anna collection is the result of rigorous ergonomic testing, ensuring that guests remain comfortable whether they are in a quick meeting or a three-course dinner.

4. Cohesive Design Language

One of the greatest challenges for an interior designer is sourcing pieces from different categories that still feel “related”. Domkapa’s collections are designed to be cousins, if not siblings. The shared use of geometry and joinery details across the Adam and Anna lines allows for a harmonious flow across different zones of a large-scale project.
