Dining Under the Stars: Designing An Outdoor Dining Area

In 2024, an outdoor design project is incomplete without an outdoor dining area! These spaces can become central features of exterior design by combining functionality with an inviting atmosphere to improve alfresco dining experiences.

An outdoor dining area should be thoughtfully arranged with weather-resistant dining tables, comfortable seating and ambient lighting to create a perfect setting for meals at any time of day. In fact, we reunited some tips you should have in mind when designing this area to keep it functional, aesthetic and comfortable!

OUTDOOR DINING AREA

  • If you want to benefit from the outdoor dining area all year round, try to make it an indoor-outdoor patio on a covered terrace;
  • Take advantage of all the outdoor space of your project by adding an extra sitting area with a sofa, armchairs and a coffee table;
  • Providing shade in an outdoor dining area is very important, especially if it is not under a covered terrace. Keep in mind that designing these areas implies designing spaces that will be comfortable and eating must be pleasurable. No one likes to eat surrounded by mosquitos or burning under the sun, right?
  • Selecting the right lighting is essential. If the dining table is placed next to a wall, you can use wall lamps to adorn and illuminate the area. However, if it is in an open area, you should consider adding floor lamps.

TABLE SETTING ESSENTIALS

Table linens, such as tablecloths or placemats, set the tone and add a touch of elegance, followed by minimalist dinnerware and glassware. Centrepieces, like fresh flowers, candles, or potted plants, add a natural and inviting focal point. Proper lighting, from string lights to lanterns, ensures the ambience remains warm and welcoming as the sun sets. Additionally, don’t forget practical accents such as napkin holders, utensils, and serving dishes to provide convenience and functionality.

We thoughtfully gathered these essentials and divided them by colours so you can transform your outdoor dining area into a sophisticated, enjoyable space perfect for any occasion!
