In modern interior design, the balance between form and function is often key to creating a space that feels comfortable and livable. The Very White project by Joana Pais achieves this delicate balance with a design that feels effortlessly elegant, warm and welcoming.

For us, the highlights of this space are the Olivia Sofa and the Gilbert Side Table, both integral to the overall aesthetic. Together, they bring a harmonious and calm vibe into the living room, offering understated elegance with a focus on organic forms and soft neutral tones.

ABOUT JOANA PAIS

Based in Portugal, Joana Pais is the author of the Very White project! Her early professional experience was in the footwear and fashion industry, where she worked for three years; however, she has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in interior design.

Over time, she began to feel a lack of fulfilment and decided to return to her field of study. Through a brief search, Joana secured an interview and was hired as an interior designer for a local store. After five months in this role, she was invited to join a new project at a store in Porto, and, recognising the greater challenge and motivation this opportunity would offer, she accepted.

Joana then resumed her studies, honing her skills in Studio Max 3D and began creating dreamy spaces like the Very White project. It’s in this area of 3D design that she now finds her true professional happiness!

A Neutral Palette, Enhanced by Texture and Light

What sets the Very White project apart is its masterful use of a predominantly neutral colour scheme without losing depth or warmth. The soft cream tones of one module of the Olivia Sofa and the light, natural wood of the Gilbert Side Table are accented by rich textures throughout the space.

Natural light floods the room, highlighting the thoughtful arrangement of each piece. Also, the large windows and sheer curtains allow light to diffuse gently, enhancing the bright, airy feel of the space. The resulting ambience is one of openness and serenity, where each element—be it furniture or decor—works in harmony with the others.

Olivia Sofa

The centrepiece of the living area, the Olivia Sofa, stands out not just for its visual appeal but also for its practical design. The sofa’s rounded, almost sculptural silhouette invites the user to relax, encouraging a sense of conversation and connection. Its curved upholstery contrasts beautifully against the clean lines of the room, making it a statement piece and a comfortable hub for social gatherings.

One of Olivia’s modules is upholstered in beige, while the other is green, blending perfectly with the room’s overall palette. Yet, despite its softness and elegance, it retains a sense of approachability. Paired with rich, warm-toned throw pillows, the sofa maintains warmth and charm, ensuring that it feels like a cosy gathering space rather than a purely decorative element.

Gilbert Table Set

Complementing the Olivia Sofa is the Gilbert Side Table, a piece that echoes the project’s commitment to subtle yet refined design. Crafted from rich, warm wood, the table brings an earthy touch that contrasts with the light tones of the sofa. Its organic form, with soft edges and a sturdy base, adds dimension to the room without overpowering the overall aesthetic.

Functionally, the Gilbert Side Table serves as the perfect anchor for small decor pieces, like the minimalist sculpture featured in this space. It also provides a handy surface for drinks, books or a beautiful decorative centrepiece, enhancing its role as both a practical and artistic addition.
