Care & Maintenance: A Specifier’s Guide To Furniture Longevity

When a stain shows up on a client’s sofa eighteen months after installation, you’re usually the first call – not us. Care instructions rarely survive the handover, yet they’re as much a part of the spec as fabric composition or frame construction.

At Domkapa, durability starts on the production floor: manual techniques, refined over time, and premium materials chosen to hold up under daily use. But even the best-built piece needs the right aftercare to perform as designed. Here’s what’s worth passing on to your clients, material by material.

Upholstery

  • Clean with a damp cloth for routine care.
  • For stains, use a damp cloth with a neutral-pH natural soap.
  • Keep upholstery away from chemical cleaners – they break down the fibres over time.

Wood

  • Dust with a dry cloth or a soft-bristle brush.
  • For deeper cleaning, use a cloth dampened in a neutral-pH soap solution, then dry immediately with a clean cloth.
  • Skip furniture polish altogether.
  • Wipe spills as soon as they happen – standing liquid is the main cause of surface damage.
  • Protect against scratches with felt pads or coasters wherever contact is frequent.

Metals & Glass

  • Clean with a soft cloth dampened in a neutral-pH soap solution, then dry with a clean cloth.
  • Avoid abrasive products and chlorine-based solutions.
  • For fingerprints, use a soft cloth or one dampened with isopropyl alcohol.

Lacquered

  • Use a soft cloth dampened with water only – brushes and abrasive materials will scratch the finish.
  • For deeper cleaning, use a cloth dampened in a neutral-pH soap solution, rubbing gently, then wipe with a water-only cloth and dry with a soft cloth.
  • To restore shine, buff with a dry cloth in circular motions.

Worth flagging at handover

Keep furniture away from pets and children where accidental damage is likely, out of direct sunlight (it dries out and fades most materials), and away from high humidity unless the piece was specified for that environment.

Routine maintenance is what keeps a specification looking the way it did on delivery day and it’s a conversation worth having with clients before problems start, not after.

For the full breakdown – warranty terms, material-specific details and everything else your clients might ask – our Care & Maintenance page is built to be shared. And if a project needs more than that, your account manager is here to help.
